The Red Cross is refusing to release information
on 1,000 units of suspect blood that were released into the general
population and may have represented a major health risk. The Red Cross was
fined $4.6 million by the FDA for mishandling this blood. Now, the Red Cross
will not disclose whether the blood was destroyed, if it was used and if any
patients became ill from the blood. Read our backgrounder.
MRC is petitioning the Red Cross for full disclosure and calling on leading

Citizen Petition States:
As a concerned citizen, I am calling on the Red
Cross to provide full disclosure of what happened to
the 1,000 units of suspect blood mishandled by the
Red Cross for which the organization was fined $4.6
million by the FDA. Specifically, I am calling on
the Red Cross to disclose: if any of the units made
it into the general population; if any patients
became ill; if the units were destroyed; and any
other information pertinent to public health and
safety.
In addition, I am calling on the national media --
including the New York Times, the Washington Post,
the Chicago Tribute and Los Angeles Times -- to
cover the story of the Red Cross’ lack of full
disclosure as a matter of national health and
safety.
